Professor Dr. A. S. M. Maksud Kamal is a distinguished academician and scientist. He currently holds the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Dhaka University, a role he has been serving in since June 2020. Dr. Kamal is a professor in the Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience at Dhaka University. Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Geology at the same institution.
Dr. Maksud Kamal has an extensive international academic background, having served as a visiting professor at University College London, UK, from April 2022 to March 2027. During this time, he was actively engaged with the Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR).
His academic journey began at Dhaka University, where he completed his B.Sc. (Honors), M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in the field of geology. Before joining the university, he worked as a scientist at the Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) for nearly six years. Additionally, he conducted research as a Research Fellow at the Bose Center for Advanced Study and Research in Natural Sciences at Dhaka University.
Dr. Maksud Kamal is a well-known expert in the fields of earthquake and tsunami risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and environmental conservation. He has worked with the UNDP/CDMP project in Bangladesh for four years, focusing on disaster management. Furthermore, he served as an earthquake engineering specialist in the UNDP/ADPC project in Iran in 2007.
His contributions to academia and research are extensive, with over 65 scientific articles published in various national and international journals. He has been a reviewer for multiple international journals and has contributed to over 100 research works, including articles, reports, and book chapters.
Dr. Maksud Kamal has also actively served in various government ministries and institutions as a consultant and specialist in disaster risk reduction and environmental management.
Apart from his academic roles, he has been deeply involved in the governance and administration of Dhaka University, having served as the Chair of the Department of Disaster Science and Climate Resilience. He has held multiple academic and administrative positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Dhaka University. He has been a member of the Senate, Syndicate, and Academic Council of Dhaka University, as well as various university committees.
In addition to his academic and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Maksud Kamal has actively contributed to various research institutions, serving as the Chairman of the National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) and the President of the Bangladesh Society of Informatics (BSI). He has also been involved with the Bangladesh Geological Society (BGS) and the Bangladesh Earthquake Society (BES).
